About

FAST, the Fun Autocross Society of Tampa, is a loosely structured club with the intent of organizing regular autocross events in the Tampa Bay area.  Read our History and Expectations below for more information.

History

FAST was created late in 2006 as an independent not-for-profit organization with the sole purpose of holding autocross events for the enjoyment of motorsport driving enthusiasts in the Tampa area. The organization began many years earlier as the autocross program of the SunRiders Miata Club of Tampa Bay.

The SunRiders began their autocross program in the mid-90′s as an outlet for club members to autocross in a casual environment, and they had a successful program for several years. Over time, the SunRiders club lost interest in the autocross program and there just weren’t enough Miata drivers to support the program. Drivers of other cars were encouraged to get involved, and some did, but a lot of non-Miata drivers were reluctant to join a “Miata Club”.

The motorsports division of the SunRiders club officially separated in 2006 and joined forces with NASA Florida. This merger was halted after one year due to NASA being a for-profit organization, and NASA Florida being operated very much in a business fashion with strong expectations that our autocross program turn a profit.  Generating profit for a business was never our intent, we just want to have fun!

And so, here we are. No higher authority to answer to, just a group of local guys looking to share the fun of autocrossing.

Dues & Expectations

Dues? We don’t collect any dues! You simply can’t buy a membership in this club. So, how do you become a member? You “earn” your membership by attending events. Compete in four events and/or act as an event chairman for an event, and you are considered a member for the season. Cool, huh?

What does membership get you? It qualifies you for our season points championship, so that you may collect a trophy at the end of the year. It gives you the right to help make decisions regarding club policy. Um… that’s about it, really.

We do have some meager expectations of our members. Keeping in mind that this is an all-volunteer organization, all we ask is that you volunteer to help out as much as you can. We realize that some people have more time to give than others do, but if you have time to compete at an autocross, you should have time to help out at SOME of them.

Show up early to help set up. Stay late to help clean up. Volunteer to be an event chairman. Ask what you can do to help. The more people who pitch in a little, the easier it is for everyone. There are pages on this site that go more into detail about how you can help, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with them.
