The only thing that would suck worse is if you had to pay someone else to do your wrenching. Mad skills are good to have.CaptainSquirts wrote:Blue_Heron wrote:That sux.CaptainSquirts wrote:Welp drained the tranny oil and some fat metal stuck on drain plug., why yes it does.

Rear diff out. Tomorrow will be transmission and transfercase. It'll be a PITA from what I've read and heard.
P.S I need to get a breaker bar. Some of these bolts are a pita

Got the transmission and transfer case off yesterday. This was not one bit fun at all, so much prying and pulling to get this sucker out. Would've been a lot less painful if had a lift/transmission jack but gotta make do what with you got. Even with a helper it still sucked. I hope whenever putting it back in it will be a lot smoother. The pry bar was the MVP of the tools that day.
p.s not a fan uploading attachments through this site. Stuff is always flipped upside down or correctly randomly. Even when I flip the photo the other way when it was showing upside down on this website, it still shows upside down. Plus I can only attach up to 3 in a post. Uploading through imgur shows the photos in the right position plus I can paste all the links in one post rather than spread out.
Before tranny pulled

After tranny pulled. Hello clutch

The bit 3, just missing engine I suppose

Hard work! I think I'm beginning to like my more traditional STI powertrain...seriously - good work!

Friend that helped me has a WRX and agreed, way easier for his tranny pull. The Mitsubishi has easier access for the engine, but no room for the drivetrain. The Subaru's has easier access to the drivetrain but hard access to the engine itself.

Pulled off a small plate cover on the transmission and transfercase. Everything that I saw looked pretty good. I can't see all the gears/components but from the ones I saw, they looked fine.
Transmission gears

Little different angle of Transmission gears

A little deeper look in, cant see it all.

Inside transfer case ring and pinion look all good.

Well I got an idea about the status on the transmission, and the transfercase. Pretty much worst case scenario
... I have pretty good details but will know fully once I see the invoice. Oh it hurts..

How hard/expensive is another transmission vs rebuilding it? But for enthusiast cars like an evo, Im weary of a used tranny and having the same thing happen again.

How hard.
???
A new transmission is about $4000. Getting used probably around $1500. I'll just say the transmission portion for the rebuild is closer to the newer price compared to the used price.. But is rebuilt better than new and will feel better(gear detailing) and stronger(shot peening).

Shot peening is good. Might be enough to keep it from failing again anytime soon.

The "Push Harder, Suck Less" philosophy explained:
Push Harder - Drive as close to the limit of your tires as possible.
Suck Less - Drive something resembling a proper racing line.

Honestly I bet a lot of the wear was from my early days way before autocross. Bad hard launches which probably had the issues stemmed from there. I know how to be more gentle on a launch now. Burn that clutch up! Probably the only reason why stuff hasn't exploded yet. Transfer case ring and pinion, and the front diff had some fractures showing. If I did a bunch of stupid aggressive launches at autox I'm sure those would've exploded by now.
