A lot of clubs have a handful of people who do everything. We used to be that way, too. It works if you have a dedicated group who work well together, come up with a good system, and somehow miraculously don’t get burned out after a few years. But, more often than not, people in that situation get burned out. It’s a lot of work, especially when you’re the one there doing it EVERY time.
Our solution to the problem is to have an event chairman and co-chairman for every event. These people and their personal circle of friends get to take on the major “work” behind putting on their one event. And then the next time, they don’t have to… someone else does! It works wonderfully, and helps to keep a constant flow of fresh people learning “the ropes” rather than just having a few people who know how to get things done. Best of all, nobody gets burned out. Well, almost nobody. No, really, if we get enough volunteers for these event chairman positions and all of the other positions, the workload on EVERYONE goes down. We all get to have more fun, and that’s what it’s all about.
Being an event chairman and having “your” event can be a very satisfying experience, too. There’s something about coming up with your own course design concept, executing it, running the show for the day, and having everyone tell you what a great time they had that’s just… fulfilling. And it’s really not THAT much work. It’s just stuff that nobody wants to get stuck doing at every event.
Just like everything else, we wouldn’t turn you loose on this without some guidance. We have a very thorough event chairman guide that explains everything you need to do (hint: the most effective event chairman does nearly nothing… he delegates tasks to responsible people and then follows up to be sure they are done), when you need to do it, who you can call for help, what the safety guidelines are, where to look for course design information, and even a scaled map of the site for you to draw your course on. Everything you need to know is in this packet. If you can read, you can do this!
We usually try to start first-time event chairmen out as co-chairmen with an experienced event chairman. So, if you’re interested, let us know and we’ll try to find someone to pair you up with. The co-chairmen we get “trained” this year will be the event chairmen that we need to keep the program rolling next year. We need your help!
