Timing & Scoring

The timing crew is a very important part of any autocross, and we can never have too many people who know how to work timing. If you’re at an event early in the morning, find out who is setting up the timing equipment and help them do it. The equipment isn’t complicated, but there are some tricks to it. It’s not uncommon for the start of an event to be delayed because the only person who knew how to set up the timing equipment either showed up late or was busy doing something else. As soon as you become familiar with the equipment, YOU can step in and get it set up when necessary. You’ll be a hero!

You can also volunteer at any time to work in the timing trailer. More often than not, this is not a regular course work assignment and is done by knowledgeable volunteers. No special skills are required, but it is a fast-paced operation that requires at least one or two experienced people. We usually have a car starting and finishing every 20-30 seconds, it keeps you on your toes! There are typically 4 people working timing. One timer operator who monitors the timer and the course and controls the start light (probably THE most important position when it comes to keeping the event flowing properly). One writer to log times on the driver’s registration sheet. One announcer to call times over the PA and harass people mercilessly. (sometimes the timer operator can double as the announcer if he’s sharp, but it’s best for the timer operator to be able to focus on the course) And one board writer to write times on the scoreboard outside the trailer.

Timing can be a fun place to be!
